Tuesday 26th April 2016

Hi all,

The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder ... another track & field season has been and gone.  We have had our annual CMA Dinner held at the Cashmere Club.  Thank you to those who helped organise or attended thisevent.  As mentioned on the night, many of our trophy winners were by default due to the fewer competitors these days.  While this does not take anything away from those winners, we also used this night to celebrate the successes of other CMA members.  The annualCant-A-Long magazine was given out and this week I will be sending copies to those who were not at the dinner.  In this issue you will find results for all CMA members who competed this season and a list of those who broke various records.  Well done to you all.

Nick Bolton, Rick Davison, Chris Mardon, Louise Martin, Brian Senior and I went across to the Australian Masters Track & Feild Championships, held in Adelaide (16th - 19th April).  There were 669 competitors, which is thelargest number of entries they have had for some time.  Click here to view a full list of results and to see photos for this meeting.  These results are notin Cant-A-Long.

Just a reminder of What's On, Where & When.....

Winter Throws Pentathlon Series:

If throwers are interested in participating in a series of events over the winter months, please contact Bev Church (383 5448).

Cross Country & Road Season:

When you join a club you will be given an Athletics Canterbury Winter Season Booklet.  However, if you are interested in knowing what's on & when, you can download a copy  here.

CMA AGM - Wednesday 17th August 2016 @ 7:30 p.m. Port Hills Clubrooms:

The President's report for the previous year is in this issue of Cant-A-Long.  In my report I have requested more assistance from members with organising CMA events, therefore sharing the load.  I have alreadyapproached a few people who are willing to help, but I do need a few more.  If you are interested, please let me know.

NZMA / Athletics NZ 'Sharing of Membership' MoU:

The NZMA Board are still working through this exercise.  As a result of what happend at the NZMA AGM, a Special AGM will be required to pass a remit to accept the MoU.  This is planned to occur during the weekend ofthe ANZ National Cross-Country Championships, to be held in Auckland during the first weekend in August.   More details about that later.

Bryan Kerr Funeral:

It is with great sadness that I mention the death of Bryan Kerr.  He was a mentor to many and always greatly assisted those who became involved in the athletics as administrators ... rest inpeace.

Bryan's funeral is to be held at the Lamb & Hayward's Chapel, 467 Wairakei Road, Christchurch @ 10:00 a.m. this Friday 29th April 2016.

This photo was taken at the NZMA 2010 Championships.  Despite having an ankle operation, Bryan was a major organiser of this event.

Monday 7th March 2016

Hi all,

The track & field season is nearly over for most of us, with just our closing day, one more Rawhiti Domain interclub and our Throws Pentathlon Championship to go.  For those interested, you can make the trip to Greymouth for the WestCoast Championships to be held on Saturday 19th March 2016 (Programme).

I know of a few athletes around the country that are going to the Australian Masters Track & Field Championships in mid April, including Rick Davison, Louise Martin and myself.  Good luck to those going.

Well done to those who made the trip south to the NZMA Championships in Dunedin.  We had fantastic weather and there was some exciting competition.  The NZMA AGM was interesting to say the least, but more on that another day.  Click here tosee the results and photos  (Casewell Images).

Last weekend I went down to the ANZ Championships also held in Dunedin to help officiate.  It was interesting to see many of the younger Canterbury athletes I have got to know during the summer perform and do well.  Interestingly, a handful ofmasters athletes also competed and made finals.

Just a reminder of What's On, Where & When.....

Closing Night Gathering - 6:15 p.m. Wednesday 9th March 2016 @ Rawhiti Domain:

At the December Christmas Break-up meeting we had a small group of throwers compete in one event and NO track events at all!  You have to question the value of these meetings if the number attending continues to drop as it has.  So I would like toknow who is coming on Wednesday.  CLICK HERE if you are coming on Wednesday night.   Remember to bring a plate of supper to share.

Pete Watts Memorial Relay (formerly called Link Relay) - 9:00 a.m. Saturday 12th March 2016 @ Halswell Quarry:

This year we have brought this event forward at the request of Athletics Canterbury's Road & Cross-country Committee.  This is organised by us, so I will need help setting up the course.  If you can help, please let me know and be atHalswell Quarry by 8:00 a.m.  So far I have two confirmed teams.

CMA Throws Pentathlon - 10:00 a.m. Sunday 20th March 2016 @ Rawhiti Domain:

If you are interested in competing in this event, please let Bev Church know (383 5448).

CMA Dinner - 5:30 p.m. Sunday 10th April 2016 @ Cashmere Club:

A week later than previous years.  We need a minimum of 40 attending. so keep this date free.

Andrew Stark

Monday 11th January 2016

Hi all,

Welcome to 2016.  I trust your holiday periond has gone okay.  It will not be long before the championships event for the season will be upon us, so here is a run down of what's on and when.  I am looking forward to seeing some of thenew members joining in these events.

CMA Championships:  Day 1 (Saturday 30th January 2016) & Day 2 (Saturday 6th February 2016) - RawhitiDomain

We will be using the same programme as last year, spreading the events over two weekend and concluding with a BBQ following Day 2 events.  I will postthe programme ASAP once I have up-dated last years programme file.  We did consider having Day 2 the following weekend, but it clashes with the Buller Half Marathon event.

Monday 14th December 2015

Hi all,

It's hard to believe that it's almost Christmas and the end of 2015.  The track & field season is well underway.  So far there have been very few CMA members competing at Rawhiti Domain at the Saturday Interclub meetings.  We successfullyhosted the South Island Masters Track & Field Championships in Timaru.  It was decided at the SI AGM, that CMA would host the event again next season.

The Jack King Memorial Throws Pentathlon was held last Saturday (Results ) at Rawhiti Domain.  Thank you Ann Davsion for officiating the event, with help from thecompetitors.

What's On, Where & When .....

CMA Christmas Break-up Meeting - Wednesday 16th December @ Rawhiti Domain, 6:15 p.m.

This is one of three opportunities alll season for us to get together, so please make the effort to be there.  There will be a free raffle and a quiz with prizes ... so come andenjoy the evening, even if you do not intend to compete.

Open 10000m Championships - Saturday 19th December 2014 @ Rawhiti Domain, 4:30 pm.:

The Open Athletics Canterbury 10000m Championships are being held at Rawhiti Domain.  Last year, only masters athletes ran this event.  Will it be like that again thisyear?

Health & Safety Issue:  We all probably walk around a track & feild meeting thinking "It will never happen to me!".  However, at the recent North Island MastersTrack & Field Championship, Bruce Clarke was struck on the head by a shot put during the warm up.  He later passed away from the injury he sustained.  This high-lights the need to be aware of what could go wrong at any of the throwing events.  Please make sure youfollow instructions from officials and position yourself in a 'safe' place in-between throws / puts.

See you Wednesday ...

Kind regards.

Andrew

Monday 23rd November 2015

Hi All,

Another South Island Championships event has been and gone.  I personally was happy with the way the meeting went, apart from the electronic issues at the start of Saturday afternoons events.  Being part of a combined meeting addedinterest for all, as there was something going on, on the track all day.  The results are now available.  I will be checking for records, but if you think you have broken one, send me an e-mail.

To view the South Island Masters Track & Feild Results CLICK HERE.

Thank you for your attention at the AGM.  It was good to have an opportunity to explain the proposed partnership between NZMA & ANZ.  I apreciated your feedback.  For those who requested certificates, you can expect them later this week(hopefully).

I trust you enjoyed the weekend.  I look forward to meeting up with many of you again in Dunedin.

Regards,

Andrew Stark

Sunday 15th November 2015

Hi All,

In less than a weeks time, Canterbury Masters Athletics will be hosting the South Island Masters Track & Field Championships at Aorangi Stadium Timaru.  We last held the event there in 2013 and we have slightly fewer competitors this time. Perhaps this reflects that it has already been a busy season with overseas trips to events in France and in Rarotonga already been and gone.

Click on the link below to view the programme booklet for the event.  Due to higher than expected numbers in the field event, these will be running as separate gender events.  This has meant that I have had to amkes some changes to the timevarious event start.  You will still have a 'throw' on at the time indicated previously, but it may be a different event.

South Island Track & Field Championships - Timaru20th - 22nd November 2015 - PROGRAMMEBOOKLET:

You will all receive a printed version of this bookletin your race pack, so you do not need to print your own copy.  Race packs will be available at Aorangi Stadium from 3:45 p.m. Friday 20thNovember.

As you will see, we are holding this event within abusy Athletics Canterbury Combined Event and Interclub programme.  I believe this is great way to hold our event as it means there is always something going on to watch.  It is also in line with the current way NZMA are moving, that is creating a partnership with AthleticsNew Zealand whereby we share membership and work together to encourage all masters to compete ourevents.

Help required:  Like many Centres, Canterbury struggles to get enough officials to run all event, especially field events.  Thank you to those who have already indicated they can help ..... but PLEASE if any of you can help, make yourself know to me or turn up at a field if you see there is a shortage of officials.  If we share the jobs, it is easier for us all.

South Island Masters AGM:

At the South Island Masters AGM, you will have an opportunity to hear feedback from our NZMA Board Meeting and the recent discussions I have had with Linda Hamersley (ANZ CEO).

Together we have created a Memoradum of Understanding about how ANZ & NZMA will work together for the good of Masters Athletics.  This information will be presented to all members and is up for discussion.  Following thisconsultation period, I will present our findings at the NZMA AGM in Dunedin (26th February 2016) and your Centre representatives will vote for or against this partnership.

I have updated the information of the 'NZMA / ANZ' page, so please read to too.

Finally, please read the programme.  I am not the greatest at proof reading my own work, so I apologise know if you find minor errors, but I wanted to get this out to you all ASAP.

I look forward to catching with you in Timaru.

Kind regards,

Andrew Stark

Thursday 1st October 2015

HI All,

The season is almost upon us.  At the August CMA AGM the new committee for the year ahead was selected.  There are three fewer members than last year, so if you are interested in becoming involved, please let me know. Thank you to those who havebeen willing to stay involved.  As we are not hosting any championship events in our region this season, the Committee meetings will be few and far apart, i.e. only as and when regarded.
